The Tennyson Society exists to promote the study and understanding of the life and work of Alfred, Lord Tennyson, in the belief that poetry is an important part of our cultural heritage and that it should play an increasingly significant part in contemporary cultural life. The Society now has personal and institutional members (including universities, libraries, colleges and schools) all over the world, with a particularly active membership in North America.

The Society has assisted in the purchase of original material for the Tennyson Research Centre which it helps to publicise by means of various publications. Major contributions have been the compilation of Vols.I and II of Tennyson in Lincoln : a catalogue of the collections in the Tennyson Research Centre, and the catalogue of the 1992 exhibition, Tennyson 1809 - 1892: a Centenary Celebration. Since 1967 the Tennyson Research Bulletin has been issued annually; this includes articles on aspects of the poet's life, news of work in progress throughout the world, reviews, and other miscellaneous material. The Bulletin has proved of great value both to scholars and to those whose interest is less academic. In addition to the Bulletin members receive Monographs and Occasional Papers as they are issued, and the Annual Report. A number of tapes and recordings are also available. List of publications

Society events include lectures, visits, weekend seminars, the Annual Memorial Service at Somersby or Bag Enderby in August, and the London Day in October which includes the laying of a wreath at Westminster Abbey. Conferences, artistic programmes and events in co-operation with other bodies sharing similar interests are also held from time to time.
